The Rotary Foundation

Who are Rotary Foundation Members?

All 1.2 million Rotarians world wide, belonging to over 32,000 clubs in over 168 countries are members of the Rotary Foundation.

How Does the Rotary Foundation Get Their Funding?

All funding of the Rotary Foundation comes from donations made by the Rotary members world wide, and not from annual dues paid to Rotary International.

How is the Rotary Foundation Structured?

As indicated on the diagram, the Rotary Foundation has two funds:

  1. The Annual Programs Fund
  2. The Permanent Fund

The Annual Programs Fund

The Annual Programs Fund is the lifeblood that supports the Foundation’s educational and humanitarian programs. “Every Rotarian, Every Year” is the current initiative to increase support for the Annual Programs Fund. “Sustaining Members” are those members who agree to make a tax deductible contribution of at least $100US each year. After cumulative contributions of $1,000US have been made, you receive the honour of becoming a “Paul Harris Fellow”.

The contributions are invested for three years prior to being disbursed to various projects. The earnings cover administration costs so none of the contributions are spent on administration. After 3 years, 50% of the Annual Fund is allocated to the “World Fund” for international projects for which every district may apply. The other 50% is allocated to the District Designated Fund to pay for Designated Initiatives of the district.

Contributions may be designated for Polio Plus, which donations are solely used for Rotary’s efforts to eradicate polio world wide.

The Permanent Fund

The Permanent Fund is the Foundation’s Endowment Fund and accordingly the principal is invested in perpetuity. Earnings support international, cultural, and educational activities as well as a portion of the earnings go back into the fund to offset inflation erosion of the capital.

Contributions to the Permanent Fund are mainly by Planned Giving and include bequests via wills, gifts of securities as well as proceeds of life insurance policies taken out by Rotarians.
